Whilst employed at NGV, Peter undertook the exhibition design for Shifting Gear: Design, Innovation and the Australian Car, working closely with RMIT Design Archive director Harriet Edquist as the curator for the project. The exhibition’s design needed to accommodate the display of over twenty cars - many of them heritage vehicles - in the Federation Square gallery, presenting numerous engineering and installation challenges to overcome. The exhibition proved to be one of the most successful exhibitions at NGV Australia, drawing new audiences to the gallery for the first time.

“I worked with Peter on the development of Shifting Gear: Design, Innovation and the Australian Car, a groundbreaking exhibition undertaken in collaboration with the National Gallery of Victoria and presented at The Ian Potter Centre at Federation Square in 2015.
Peter engaged with me early on in the project's development, working closely and collaboratively to turn my research and narrative into three dimensions. His enthusiasm for the subject material and thoughtful consideration of the design history gave me the confidence to support his design approach.
Peter shaped the exhibition into its captivating final form, transforming a complex history into a richly engaging visitor experience. I greatly enjoyed working with Peter and hope to collaborate with him again on future projects.”
